Just had to take a minute to celebrate the glorious Lenten tradition of...the soup supper.
Soup suppers before mid-week Lenten worship have been very common among congregations with which I've been involved, both here and elsewhere. It's a great way for people to connect for fellowship outside of Sunday morning, when they might be busy with adult classes or Sunday school or altar guild duties or any number of other things.
I was at Hegre for half of Lent this year, and they host a delightful soup supper: a couple kinds of soup, a couple kinds of bread, and a dessert. Simple, effective, delicious.

I talked with several parishioners yesterday about Soup Suppers (while eating our Soup Supper) and how it is their faviorte time of the church year because they get to come together in fellowship at a different time in a simple way. Others told me that they like not having to cook, or their wife likes not having to cook. They also said how much easier and less of a rush it is to come to a midweek service since dinner is provided. I guess in previous years attendance dies down by the last week, but not this year. We have had 5-8 different kinds of soups to try from each week. And we are having a Soup Supper next Thursday before our Maundy Thursday service which many people were quite pleased to read about in the bulletin.
